As car manufacturers has converted from metal / chrome bumpers to plastic bumpers for quite some time now, the one major challenge that new car dealers and body shop has to face is educating the general public why there is a difference in color between the bumper and the adjacent metal panels of the vehicle. In the assembly line, plastic bumpers are usually painted separately from the body of the vehicle – in most cases at a different location as well! This is due to the fact that the plastic bumpers will not withstand the higher bake process that the metal part of the vehicle can. Because of the different application process, this can result in color mismatch.
In most cases, a vehicle owner does not notice this difference until they are in need of a bumper repair or repaint. Flakey, dark or light appearance is usually the most noticeable between the bumper and the body of the vehicle either coming out from the factory or after a refinish. In some cases, the color might look very good at one angle and totally different from another angle. As seen in the picture of this blog, this vehicle is a lighter colored vehicle which usually highlights the color mismatch the most; and also being a 2014 vehicle brand new off the lot. As you can / might be able to see that there is a slight lighter variation in color on the bumper vs the ¼ panel of the vehicle.
